Group text messaging (Group MMS)

Send and receive multi-party SMS group threads in MyLawyerLink using Twilio Group MMS.

Group text messaging (Group MMS)

MyLawyerLink supports Group MMS โ€” a shared text thread where multiple people (for example a client, their spouse, and your firm) all see the same messages, similar to a native phone group text.

Requirements

  • Feature flag: Your deployment must have ENABLE_SMS_GROUP_MESSAGING=true.
  • Phone number: Your firm's primary Twilio number must be a US/Canada long code (+1). Toll-free and short codes do not support Group MMS.
  • Participants: Up to 9 external recipients plus your firm's projected number (10 total in the Twilio conversation).
  • Twilio account: Group MMS must be enabled for your Twilio account and carriers. If messages show as sent but are not delivered, contact Twilio support.

Sending a group message

  1. Open the Messages widget from the header.
  2. Click Group message in the thread list sidebar.
  3. Search for clients and add at least two recipients (or add numbers from client phone lists).
  4. Click Start group conversation, type your message, and send.

For an existing group thread, open it from the conversation list and reply normally. Replies go to everyone in the group.

How it differs from 1:1 SMS

  • 1:1 messages still use classic SMS/MMS (one recipient per thread).
  • Group messages use Twilio Conversations. Each group appears as a single thread in MyLawyerLink with participant names in the header.
  • Inbound replies from any participant appear in the same thread and show the sender's phone number on each bubble.

Limitations

  • US/Canada +1 numbers only for group participants.
  • Maximum 10 total participants per group (including your firm number).
  • Group MMS is not the same as sending the same text to many people separately; everyone shares one thread on their phones.
  • The mobile app may not yet show group compose; use the web messenger for creating new group threads.
