Document Templates
Upload Word templates, edit merge fields, and generate filled documents from a case in MyLawyerLink.
Document templates let you generate client-ready Word files from a .docx template and the data already in MyLawyerLink.
Before you start
- Prepare a Word document (
.docx) with merge field placeholders. See Using Merge Fields for syntax and field names. - You need permission to manage templates and an active subscription.
Upload a template
- Go to Account โ Document Templates (
/account/templates). - Click Upload template and select your
.docxfile. - Give the template a name your team will recognize (for example "Engagement letter โ civil").
After upload, MyLawyerLink scans the file for merge fields and lists them on the template record.
Edit merge fields (optional)
- Open the template from the list and choose Edit to open the OnlyOffice editor (when configured for your team).
- Adjust document text and placeholders in Word as needed.
- Save from the editor โ merge field metadata syncs on the server when you leave the editor.
If OnlyOffice is not enabled, you can re-upload an updated .docx from your desktop Word app.
Generate a document from a case
- Open the case you want the document for.
- Go to the Documents section on the case page.
- Choose Generate from template (or equivalent action in the documents toolbar).
- Select your template and confirm.
- Download or save the generated file. Placeholders are replaced with that case's client and case data.
Review the output before sending it to a client or court โ especially the first time you use a new template.
Best practices
- Preview with a real case โ long names, missing optional fields, and custom fields are easier to catch on a test matter.
- Version your templates โ when you change language materially, upload a new file or rename the template so staff know which version is current.
- One template per document type โ engagement letter, status update, cover sheet, etc. Use merge fields instead of separate templates per client.
